George Eliot Hospital welcomes Nicaraguan Ambassador at Equality Conference

Nicaraguan Ambassador in the centre with the Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton and Bedworth
Her Excellency, the Ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua, Guisell Morales-Echaverry visited the George Eliot Hospital last week, to chat with its visitors and staff at their annual equality conference.
George Eliot Hospital has a twinning agreement with Nilda Patricia Hospital in Ciudad Sandino, just outside Managua, Nicaragua.
The event, organised by the George Eliot Hospital and its local Unison conveners, was also attended by The Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Councillor Bill Hancox and his wife Sheila.
George Eliot Hospital equality conference featured a range of talks on issues affecting equality, diversity and inclusion, both in the workplace and within the community.
Representatives from the Local Gurkha Community came along to talk about their experiences and the local police spoke about bullying and hate crime.
Staff also featured their own personal journeys while others discussed the Freedom to Speak Up initiative, launched last year at the hospital, and the role of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) based within the hospital site.
Hinckley Sea Cadets also helped to welcome the Ambassador and visitors to the event.
The Ambassador spoke about the economic journey for her own country, as well as the recent improvements to health in the community. She also discussed the current issues affecting the republic of Nicaragua including the Zika Virus and ongoing financial challenges.
Her Excellency, Guisell Morales-Echaverry said: “I cannot thank the George Eliot Hospital staff enough for organising the conference and accepting me as speaker. This event gave me the opportunity to share with all the attendees the Nicaraguan path to develop an equal society, because another way is possible.
“I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and for making me feel very welcome.”
Director of Human Resources, Sue Wakeman said: “We would like to thank Her Excellency, the Mayor and representatives from our local community who made this event such a success.
This informative and innovative conference for our staff also helped to strengthen partnerships within our local community and through our twinning agreement with Nicaragua.”
