Nicaragua the safest country in Central America

NSCAG News | on: Thursday, 1 February 2018

According to latest statistics released by Insight Crime, Nicaragua has retained its position as the safest country in Central America. The statistics show that in Nicaragua there were 7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants as compared to 10.2 in Panama, 12.1 in Costa Rica, 26.01 in Guatemala, 42.80 in Honduras, and 60 in El Salvador.

In addition, Nicaragua's capital city Managua has the lowest homicide rade of any city in the Americas at 5 per 100,000 inhabitants as compared with 14 in Ottawa, 18 in Washington and 116 in San Salvador.

Much of this can be attributed to low levels of corruption and to the Government's success in dealing with gangs and drug trafficking. The Nicaraguan model, based on the family and the community, together with successful community policing has also helped to keep Nicaragua and Nicaraguans safe.

The statistics make it all the more astonishing that the US is seeking to punish Nicaragua through the imposition of sanctions which will serve only to destabilise the country and increase poverty and, in all likelihood, increase crime as a result.
