Wage Rises Announced for Nicaraguan Workers

NSCAG News | on: Wednesday, 29 January 2014

In a sign of its continued commitment to workers’ rights, the Sandinista Government has announced wage rises for teachers, health professionals and workers in the state and municipal sectors. Workers in the state and municipal sectors will receive a salary increase of 5%, while some 30,000 health workers, including doctors and nurses, will receive increases of around 7%. In the education sector, an increase of 11% will benefit some 52,000 teachers and support staff who currently earn less than 20,000 cordobas (ca. £476). The National Workers’ Federation FNT has welcomed the increases, stating that they will allow some 110,000 Nicaraguan workers to recover the purchasing power which they had previously lost when right wing governments were in power.
