Nicaraguan trade unionist to speak at UNISON fringe meeting

NSCAG News | on: Monday, 30 January 2017

Thanks to the generous support of UNISON, we will be holding a fringe meeting on Gender equality: the Nicaraguan Experience during UNISON's National Women's Conference taking place in Brighton. The fringe meeting will take place at lunchtime on Friday 17 February in the Brighton Conference Centre.

Speakers will include Dr Camila Mejia, Executive Committee Secretary of the Nicaraguan health union FETSALUD and Guisell Morales, Nicaraguan Ambassador to the UK. The meeting will be chaired by Josie Bird, a member of UNISON's National Executive Council.

The social and economic programmes implemented in Nicaragua since 2007 have led to huge advances in gender equality in Nicaragua. Nicaragua now occupies 10th position in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Equality Index, above that of the UK and USA. The session will explore the changes in women’s lives and the role that women now play in the forefront of trade union work.
