On 14 and 15 August, the 7th Congress of Health Workers in Central America and the Caribbean took place in Nicaragua. Participants attended from Nicaragua, Cuba, Argentina, Puerto Rica and the Dominican Republic. Opening the Congress, Vice Minister of Health Napoleon Ortega said that the model of consensus and partnership promoted by the Government in Nicaragua was an essential part of the restoration of rights in the health sector. The participation of everyone in the process, from nursing assistants through to doctors, meant that health care in Nicaragua had been strengthened and was particularly focused on communities and the family. During the Congress, experts met in a series of round tables on topics such as diabetes, disability, cervical cancer, perinatal mortality, HIV, public health and the impact of drugs on society.
